one by one (plop plop plop)

one by one (plop plop plop) by lovelydesign

Reid is now 11 months old, and these days he is absolutely fascinated with books. But not in the way one would ordinarily assume - in their stories and beautiful images. And of cuddling up with mom or dad and sinking into a magical storytime together. Nope - Reid is fascinated with the mechanics of books - how they pull off of a shelf (plop, plop, plop) How they open up, how the spines move and turn the pages. How the stack-stack-stack up ever so nicely. Reid spends huge amounts of his day investigating these important things.

It seems to me that Reid takes in the world differently than this older sister did. He is a scientific investigator - constantly breaking things down and analyzing them, over and over again, his tiny fingers flying over moving pages and other cranks and buttons. I am fascinated by him, and I love sitting back and watching his brain whirring away - breaking things down and begin to understand the mechanics of the world around him.

And - my oh my is he a sweetheart! See that look on his face, right there? That look pretty much sums him right up. Pure sweetness.... I am one lucky lady! Spent my whole life looking for my dream guy and finally settled for his father. (Love you, Charles!) Who ever knew my dream guy would be my little son... no one ever told me this.

Okay, I have to tell you this....I have almost an exact copy of this cute photo....it was my daughter, when she was 16 months old...she would do exactly the same thing, then pile 'em all up, and take them, one by one, and turn each and every page, before putting them all back on the shelf! The punch-line is, she is now a chemical engineer, with a Masters degree in Science.....so, look out world...here comes Reid!

that's so sweet. I love the picture and his face. I wonder what he'll be when he grows up?

I have photos of my 21 month old creating an 'installation' on our l.r. floor with our whole bookshelf. I loved watching him decide where he wanted to place the books, wondering what his reasons might be. It's so amazing to see the differences between your kids and love them for it! I love the way boys can steal a mom's heart forever!

First of all, I am gobsmacked that Reid is 11 months old already! Secondly, I have a girl first and boy second and I absolutely LOVE seeing how they approach the world differently. My son is almost the exact same and I often wonder if he will be an engineer someday. He is the constant scientist.

Such an adorable photo! Maybe you can sneak a video of him 'working' that way when he gets older, you can show him he was a genius from the day he was born

My parents have a similar photo with my brother pulling all the books off the shelves too - I think he wasn't even walking at that stage, just using sheer determination to hold on to the bookshelf and pull down those books!

As an editor, writer and Mum to three, I believe that reading starts with a curiosity and interest in books - in any direction!
