tempting fate

Sometimes so much is going on that I am not even sure where to begin.

This past summer my partner Charles and I began to get the urge to make a move in life. We agonized for several months... by making changes, are we being foolish to give up our comfortable and happy lives? Are we tempting fate? Or are we just moving forward, as life should, and living? We contemplated all summer long.

But by October we finally decided to make a leap of faith and list our lovely home for sale on the market. A few weeks later it was sold, and so we spent the next month house shopping. In November we found a charming little heritage house on the east side of Vancouver. By December we bought and passed subjects on the little house. And this January, we will be moving and settling into our new home and neighborhood. Woosh!

So, in the midst of all this, Christmas hasn't really been too much on my mind. It really snuck up on me this year!

This past week I have been attempting to whip out a few home-made presents, baking lots, and making homemade wrapping paper with Addie. We've also been kept busy by our little wild man Reid, who all in the space of 1 week somehow sprouted teeth, learned to crawl, stand, cruise, and notice (terrorize) the poor cats with his shrieks of love and full-body hugs. And in between all the moments I am gathering up moving boxes and beginning to disassemble and pack our lives away.

These are full days. I am looking forward to settling in and sharing more of them with you again, real, real soon.

Hi -- the link to Charles is a dead one and reads like this: http://www.blogger.com/fantasticfunmachine.blogspot.com/

but congratulations on buying a house in Vancouver. I didn't think it was possible!

Welcome to East Vancouver! Maybe we will be neighbours....

Congratulations on your new home! And welcome to the East Side! I grew up in East Van and after having lived all over the lower mainland, we are back in East Van again and loving it. Happy Holidays and all the best with your big move!

Hi Everyone - thank you for your wishes! I am so looking forward to having this move over with and even really looking forward to restoring our 100 year old house.

Carrie -Thank you for the link correction, I have now updated it. I didn't think it was possible to have a house in Vancouver, either. This city is completely insane for housing and it can be very upsetting and stressful. Somehow we have worked it out. We are moving into the Cedar Cottage area and so looking forward to it!

Anyone of you East side people have any Cedar Cottage tips? I would love to hear!!!

YAY!!!! A fun new adventure! What a thrill! I can understand the kind of chaos you must be under! I'm so excited to hear all about the move and how you make this house your own. Cool! Happy Holidays to you and your family!! I wish I had Vancouver tips; I've always wanted to visit there. A long way from New England!

Congrats on the new house. Must be very exciting! So glad to see a post from you. I quietly check for new post every now and then, and was missing your sweet daughter's face and your clever/crafty projects. Cheers and Merry Christmas!

How exiting! I love, love, love your home (I keep all the magazine articles) and I understand your hesitation to move out, but I am sure your next home will be as cozy and comfortable as your current one. I am looking forward to your new posts. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

congratulations! my husband and i are hoping to move out of our rental apt in north burnaby soon, before our baby is born -- hehe wish i knew homes were on sale in univercity, it is so charming up there!

i used to live in the cedar cottage area, i dont think i have any amazing tips other than:
- the newly built library at knight and kingsway is lovely!
- famous foods on kingsway is always a great place to browse (but you probably already know that).
- the view from the top of 37th ave. is amazing.
- lots of little neighbourhood parks tucked in and around the streets.
- the pho place beside famous foods is good.
- there is a small chinese frozen dumpling shop that sells delicious pan fry and boiling dumplings for a good price, all handmade and frozen in huge freezers. also on the same side of the street as above.
- some of the best bahn mi subs are found along the stretch of kingsway west of knight.
- do lots of veggie groceries in the chinese markets along victoria and 37th-ish or kingsway! good prices!

enjoy your new neighbourhood!

Congratulations! I am right outside your neighbourhood (Trout Lake). My absolutely favourite haunts lately have been the winter market at Nat Bailey stadium and Le Marche St George - a beautiful little cafe nestled in among houses at 28th and St. George.

Congratulations and best wishes!

I have a question I'm wondering if you'd mind answering---your fibreglass rocker---is it orange or red? I also can't tell if it's adult sized or kid sized? Either way, it's more or less what I've been trying to find for awhile now...where did you get yours? :)

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is great blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.

We want to see your new home!!!! I drew such inspiration from your previous house(I saw the magazine spread...was it Better Homes? I forget now), your level of organization was incredible.
