learning to just let go

I have found that one of the most marvelous aspects of motherhood, is how it forces me to just let go.

I hope that I can remember this, and always carry it with me - what my babies have taught to me:

That a life lived simply is a life full of peace, and calm, and joy.

It took my cat Elliot about 6 months before he would even go in the same room as Adelaide when she was a baby. This time around with Reid, the love was immediate. Elliot has learned where the sweet stuff is! And if Reid ever struggles or cries, both of my cats come running to find me, their eyes huge with concern. They are my baby whisperers.

As an after thought, I only now just realised that my baby boy is surrounded in lovely hand-made things in these photographs. Isn't it true, that items that are made with love and care are the most beautiful and become the most loved and cherished?

The white, red, and blue quilt Reid is lying on is a quilt which I made for my daughter. I have begun the "twin" to it for Reid now as well. I am fortunate to have a lovely knitter next-door-neighbour, and she hand knit Reid's beautiful sweater just for him - lucky boy! And, many years ago, my friend Megan made my baby-to-be this lovely little green baby blanket. It ended up becoming my daughter's favourite blanket and was oh-so-well-used and well-loved. Now Reid is loving this special little blanket, too.

Elliot loves anything lovely and handmade and will cuddle up with these blankets specifically, any chance he can get... and my cat Jack adores bathing Reid's beautiful hand-knit sweater! I have a theory that pets can pick up the love + care vibes in wonderful handmade things, and they are drawn to them. Just like us.

Ah, lovely! With a three week old myself, (and a 3 and 4 yo) I'm relearning the art of letting go. And I agree - that sweater and quilt are beautiful, and so is little Reid.

I love how this photo captures the size difference between Reid and Elliott. Just the other day, I was reminiscing about the days when my cats felt heavy after carrying my son all day. Not true any more! May you have peace as you soak in these early days together.

Those are really wonderful handmade things! And you are so right- the simpler you live, the more happy and calm and "full" live seems to be.

I adore these photos...Elliot looks GIGANTIC, and he's probably a normal sized cat... My cat is a bear that everyone else is afraid of and can't understand why I put up with her (she doesn't have a pretty personality when it comes to other people), but that cat knows exactly when I am falling into a depression and she is right there with the big eyes of concern ready to snuggle or give me whatever I need to feel better. They just know...

Congratulations on your beautiful baby boy and your growing little girl. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Your images and spaces are so beautiful to look at! I remember my first year with my newborn and her almost two year older sister as a very difficult year; we moved, my husband had a new job, my oldest daughter had to share her world with a new baby. It was hard. But it got better and better and better. There was a magical moment when I first realized they were playing together! They were 3 and 1 and 1/2. They love each other intensely. They are now 17 and 15. I think they are each other's North Star. Of course they strive to define themselves in contrast to each other, but they also love each other and enjoy each other's company. They continue choose to keep their one, big room open and their beds pushed together! I hope all is well with you and your family and, again, thank you for sharing with us.

What a lovely post! I totally agree with the sentiment, being a mom myself. Our kids have so much to teach us; here's hoping we (I) will stay able and willing to soak it in and remember to use it in our everyday life and relations.

And you have adorable children! Love the little cardi on your baby boy as well - so cute! Not to mention the quilt. I wish I had one of those for my little girl :)

Such a sweet photo!

It was a hard time for me to let go of things with my baby -- I knew he was the only one I could have, so every first was also his last, but I've learned to love and embrace each and every moment (even the messy and bad ones!)
