in a little girl's room

Today Adelaide and I are puttering around the house, wondering what the day will bring us. The light is so pretty that I took these photographs of Addie hanging out in her bedroom.

This room seems to sum her right up. What-you-see-is-what-you-get. Bright and happy and cute and a little girlie but not too girlie. Simple but eclectic, full of surprises. Often neat and tidy yet always filled with favourite things. So much like her.

Our house is small, this room is tiny, and I often wish for a bit more space for us to breathe. But space aside, my hope with our home is create a place where we all - her especially - can thrive and grow and find peace and inspiration and comfort. And above all, happiness.

note: The framed posters shown here are by Japanese illustrator Shinzi Katoh. I mail-ordered them by phone from Penelope's in Chicago a few years ago now, so I don't think they have them available anymore.

The paint colour in this room is a custom colour I had up for my former studio years ago, and I've used it ever since. I love this colour, it is mellow yet happy, perfect for her room. You can find out more information about it here.

This is adorable, love the fun prints! May I ask, what is the paint color you used for A's room?

i think that her room is simply adorable. We thinkn that kids need more space but they really don't.My eldest daughter's room is so tiny you can barely swing a cat but she has her nooks any crannies and she's happy. The only time she questions it is after one of her friends have come over and told her what a small room she has!! :0(

Does she sleep by herself now? I know you two used to share a bed.

And is that face paint? If not, what's on her nose?

The rocking chair... is that the RAR? I'm hoping you'll tell me you found a less expensive version!! Love it. And she's an adorable kitten!

Oh my goodness, what a cutie! I LOVE that shinzi katoh print in the first picture!! Lucky little girl. I love the way you decorate! So fun!

I love Shinzi Katoh, and I have two prints for my daughter's room. However, I haven't found the right frames yet, nothing seems to fit! Where did you get yours? Did you just buy one larger and then cut the mat? I was thinking of doing that with the Ikea frames, but wasn't sure how nicely the mats would cut....

Hello, Everyone! Thank you for your comments, they are all cherished and appreciated.

Bernadette: This wall paint colour is a custom colour I had made up for my original studio years ago (I seem to remember bringing in an old map for them to match). I absolutely love the colour, to me it is perfect or Adelaide's room. You can find information on it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lovelydays/1261640581/in/set-72157600712037401/

lesley [smidgebox]: YES! I was wondering if you'd catch that. I love that little bucket so much - thank you for making it!

April: Yes, for the most part Adelaide sleeps on her own now. I never push(ed) it, but most if not all nights she will insist on sleeping in her OWN bed (been going on about 5 or 6 months now) If she is sick she may want to tuck in with me, Some nights she crawls into bed with me in the early hours, and sometimes only in the morning for the waking up cuddle. If we stay away from home or travel, she sleeps with me (which really makes for easy traveling - no equipment!) I didn't make a big deal about it, but she seemed just ready for her own bed.

Oh! Yes that is face paint. She has been into face painting lately and in these photos her face happened to be painted like a dog. Although it is wearing off! Glad someone noticed and just didn't think she's got a bruised up face or something!

AMB: The chair is an original vintage fiberglass Eames/HM shell on reproduction legs. (i don't really like the plastic-iness of the new ones, or the pricetag - I'm much too much of a bargain hunter for that!) I picked it up many years ago before they blew up and got crazy expensive.. (I think i paid around 150 for it?) Adelaide loves this chair and hangs out/ plays on it all the time. It is childproof and built to last!

Gray Mis: Are your Shinzi Katoh prints really really big, too? I just bought the biggest IKEA ribba frames for them as everything in our house is framed in them. I did cut the mats myself - I've gotten pretty good at it! I use a super sharp new exacto blade, a clear quilting ruler to measure (works amazing!) and largest possible self-healing cutting mat (a couple of which I picked up at Michael's when they have their 40% off coupons) And measure twice, cut once!

I know it's already been said but I LOVE the wall color too! And I can't believe how big your daughter is. I've been reading your blog for a little over a year now and it's amazing how much she's grown in that time. I feel that way about my own kids too. They grow up so fast huh?

A lovely room! I think that as long as they can stretch out on the bed and have a little floor space kids are happy!

My friend sent me a link you your blog. I live in Port Moody, at the base of your mountain. I can walk up from my house :-) I used to work at the SFU Children's center and for the last 11 years have been operating a before and after school care program in my community. I love the peacefulness of your blog and your designs are yummy. I am a scrapbooker and love your ideas. I have contacted collage collage in hope of taking my daughter and some friends there. Happy Summer.

hi sharilyn,
where did you get those prints?? they are gorgeous and my little 3yr old has an empty wall in his room!
be well.

Yes, my prints for my daughter are huge! I will need to head to Ikea and pick up two frames and give it a go. I've got lots of sharp x-acto knives so hopefully I won't find it to be too tricky. Thanks so much for your tip!

Hi, I've been lurking around for a while but was always too shy to say hi. This post made me come out of hiding! I love Adelaide's room, it's so beautiful. I'm currently pregnant and working on my baby boy's room and and this post made me excited about the future. I'm looking forward to him growing up in his room, enjoying every nook and cranny and eventually, making it all his own.

i wish my room could be like that. :) it's very cute and simple and all of the colors are great, but not overdone.

all a girl could hope for. come by and visit.

I just came across your blog and I can't stop looking! I am inspired now to rearrange my children's room. My son is almost 4 and my daughter 1 so it's tricky creating a space that works for both.

Thanks for sharing pics from your daughters room. I too love the colours!

Do you know of a blue that matches up pretty close to this blue? Woodlawn Blue by BM maybe? Just curious. Or would you happen to have the formula on the can still?

I love the feel of her room. I'm trying to capture a similar feel for my baby's (coming in Nov) nursery. Which is small, and must also serve as a guest room when family comes to visit. I'm inspired.

so beautiful, both your daughter and her room. I sometimes wish we lived in a smaller house (even though ours is about 2,000SF) = easier to clean!!! :)
