zoe and the fawn

One afternoon several weeks ago, Adelaide and I walked over to the University book store. We were rewarded with a marvelous book find, one which I had never seen or heard of before. The book we discovered that day is called Zoe and the Fawn by Catherine Jameson, and it has become one of our very favourite storybooks. It is a calming book, so gentle and unassuming, yet so sweet and charming in it's simplicity. And with such wonderful illustrations by Julie Flett... Adelaide and I both just adore it!

The story is of a little girl named Zoe, who along with her father, discovers a fawn curled up under an Aspen tree. Together, they decide to search for the fawn's mother. Along their way, they discover many different animals of the forest, and as they do the Okanagan (Syilx) names appear in the text.

So, this afternoon Addie and I went back to the bookstore and snapped up the very last copy, because we love this book so much that we wanted to share it with you all.

Oh my goodness! This book would be so perfect for my best friend and her little daughter. Her little girl is named Zoe. She is about 9 months old, and has a heart defect. She is so special because ever since we were little my friend told me that she was going to name her first little girl Zoe. Zoe had to undergo some serious heart surgeries immediately after birth, and hopefully only has to do one more. We looked up what her name means, and it means "Life". It is the perfect name because she originally didn't have a very good chance of living. Now, things are looking a bit more optomistic! Even if you don't chose to give me/her this book I would so love to know the author's name so I can try to track it down myself. Thank you so much for always being so generous!

I just had to write in and tell you about my little daughter Mina (9 months). We started going to our weekly library readings for the 2-4 age group and she loves the library! It's been a month of readings and finally last week she got her first library book. What can I say? Books are very important to me and I want to pass on my love of books, libraries, and literature to her. I also take great inspiration from all your stories about Adelaide. Your "broken" TV idea has been quite an eye opener. Overall, more than hoping we win the book, I just want to say thank you for a very pretty and meaningful blog.

I don't have any children of my own, however I work with teen mothers in a residential program in Boston. All my girls have survived abuse and/or neglect and/or homelessness, and they're trying to raise their own children the best they can.

I would love to bring this lovely book to my office, and share it with the 18 children we have living in the program (and, actually, many more than 18, because as they move out into permanent homes, new children move in)!

Please consider us!

What a truly lovely book. It would be beautiful for my woodland animal loving son. And if we win, we will send you a book back from here. How about a book swap? I am already thinking of something perfect!

What a lovely looking book. My friend's little boy Kelvin will be 2 on Monday and he loves books.....there is nothing sweeter than when you enter the house he grabs your hard, drags you to the bookshelf, takes a book, makes you sit, sits on your lap and you start to read.....

How generous of you. I have a little one who is so interested in the woods right now. We are hanging out for the bluebells to bloom but I fear it may be a long wait this year!

I would love to share this book with my daughter. She is only 18 months but is starting to love books. I dream of nights where we just read and read and I have to tell her it is time for bed. Your blog is so interesting and I loved your last post about TV. I'm hoping that we don't start on that trend either.

Me me me! And my daughter daughter daughter! Not only do we adore animals, not only are books my girl's very favorite things in the world, but deer are my special animal!

I adore reading to my children. It is definitely one of the highlights to my day, reading adventures to two very attentive and inquisitive listeners. They love animals and nature. This would be a welcome addition to their growing in home library. Thank you for your generosity and for sharing your precious find.
