So on a bit of a whim this morning, wanting to spare her the trauma of a salon, I stood her on the toilet, my sharpest sewing scissors in hand, and proceeded to snip snip away.
Soon I knew that I made a big mistake. I realised - much too late - that I am no hair professional, especially when it comes to a wriggling toddler. My sweet little girl now sports a rather mis-shaped choppy hairdo, near bald patch on one side, looking a little like she had a run-in with some sort of weed eater.
Horrified, I packaged her up and ran her over to the closest hair salon. But they had no time for our emergency, and we returned straight home, me trudging along full of melancholy, Adelaide skipping away, happily oblivious.
Guilt.
Yet, I have discovered upon our return home, that pigtails are still (if barely) possible!
Saved.

She looks adorable!
she's precious! good job on hair cut, i can't see anything wrong with it! and if SHE loves it...that is what counts :) it is so cute the way she is looking intently at YOU. lovely!
She looks gorgeous! If only I could have a cute fringe like that ;)
she looks perfect and so cute - love the little bob! you did a great job.
wait until she's old enough to give herself a haircut - THAT'S the one you need to dash to a salon for, stat! (spoken as one who did that at 12) ;-)
Oh she is too cute with that hair cut - good job Mom!
When my youngest was two she gave herself a mullet (business in the front - party in the back)that she is STILL growing out. Ha!
Yours is brilliant by comparison.
p.s try a little children's detangler spray, works like a charm
She looks perfectly cute. Give it a few days and you'll love it. =)
I think she looks just adorable! Good job, really! And really, what randi said. My worst haircut was in kindergarten under the table by 2 other girls playing hair dresser. My mom wasn't pleased as that weekend I was going to be a flower girl in a wedding party! It's only hair.
she looks perfect!! she's gonna love looking back at this picture!
Seriously, I don't think you could anything to her hair that would make her any less adorable. Plus, it will grow out before you know it. :)
It was a nice thought on your part to try to save her the trauma of her first hair cut though.
Have a good one!
Stephanie
she looks so different. but still SO cute. she reminds of me those little girls in cartoons. lol.
i miss her
She still looks so cute, maybe even cuter with the new hair style! I'm sure her hair will grow back quickly.
I think she looks great. I know that hair cutting anxiety all to well. My son freaks out when I try to comb/brush/wash/cut his hair. So in order to save the professionals from having to cut my son's hair while he screams, I do it myself. I call them my "chop-jobs." He got his first at five months. (He has so much hair that he got his first haircut at five months old!) My haircuts look a bit harsh at first, but give them a few weeks and they look great. And I've gotten better with time. Don't sweat it. She is still cute as a button, and the hair will grow.
I agree with what everyone has said...she's beautiful. I do like that length and style on her! If you still feel guilty after a few days, I'm sure that hair salon will be happy to help.
Ask her how she feels about her pretty new hair...maybe her reactions will pleasantly surprise you.

I knew I wouldn't be the first one to say this, but as a girl whose mother used to cut her hair not nearly this well? She looks fantastic - HONESTLY. She looks like a little girl in a French picture-book. (That coy hand to her throat!)
(Though I have to admit that I am frankly horrified to learn that you used your sewing scissors on hair. Even on an adorable little girl, and for a good cause, or whatever - horrified!)
As others have said, she looks just divine! From this pic, it actually looks like you did a pretty good job. Funnily enough, I have been considering giving my little girl (who is the same age as Adelaide) her very first hair cut. I am reluctant to as its taken this long to grow her hair (she was pretty much a baldy baby), but everyone tells me if I want it to thicken up, I need to give it a trim. Is this just an old wives tale?? I am frightened to cut her hair as she looks so cute with her little ringlets, and like you, I am no hair professional so might screw it up completely. Then she'll have to walk around looking like some psychopathic 2 year old....
She looks sweet! And it will grow.
(I just took my little one for his first hair cut at the barber's salon, and he quite enjoyed the occasion... he was a bit wary at first, but then seemed excited to sit up in the big chair and watch himself in the mirror).
I wouldn't worry - she looks adorable still :D
She still looks adorable!! I decided to do some haircuts last week and my middle boy ended up with a mullet, oops!
That's the thing about a toddler, they look so dang cute no matter what you do and she is adorable with her new look. Hair grows, you did a good job... but you're braver than me. My daughter is the same age and I don't know what to do with this wispy mess!
Sharilyn, don't even worry--she looks absolutely adorable!
So funny! We did the same thing and went through the same feelings with our 2 year old but (luckily, luckily) our neighbor 2 houses down is a professional hair-cutter and sprang to our rescue. We felt a lot better, but I don't think anyone else noticed the difference one way or another. Choppy hair or not, happy 2 year old children are beautiful, beautiful creatures. Yours is for sure no exception! Best to you,
Elizabeth
sharilyn!!!! i actually let out the happiest giggle when i scrolled down to see adelaide's new do. she is so incredibly tiny and sweet!!!!! she looks precious. a little lady :)
those first haircuts- they can really change those baby faces. i remember hanging onto henry's long white blonde baby hairs for-EVER. people might have thought he was a little girl. and when i finally snipped it away, suddenly it was like i had a little boy on my hands.
all sorts of sad and sweet all at once.
i can't promise you that any haircut in the future will be much easier... i always feel a little tinge of heart ache when such a change occurs. but if there's one thing about hair, it always grows back :)
she'll be sporting those wee little pig tails in no time!!!
xo
oh - don't fret. she is so cute. i did the same thing to my evie. it was her bangs. i gave her the most awful cut at that age. her bangs were so wispy and in her eyes and in her food and in everything. i just wanted it to have some shape. it did when i was done - like a mullet. rest assured you have nothing of the sort. and you know what evie's hair grew out in no time flat and she has the most beautiful locks now....
that wispy hair just gets thicker and thicker and it really does need a trim - and let me tell you - the first haircut is never easy. it makes them look so different each time. so grown up. so at least it is over. i think she looks great!
Love the bob cut! My daughter's recent cut was just like that. I think mine prefers it as the mess is no longer in her way when she eats.
she's as cute as a button!
hair washes, brushes and cuts are a no go area for our two year old too... I just try not to worry about the mess!!
I am glad that she could escape from a hair salon where I was not easy to be taken when little.
She is adorable, as always :)
I think you are maybe making it worse then what it actually appears! I think every mother attempts to cut their little ones hair, before taking them to a salon! I think her hair looks absolutely precious! You should have seen my nephew when my sister cut his hair....really, that is all I am going to say about that one! tee hee.
Happy Canada Day! I am sure your day will be filled with some wonderful event, craft or just a beautiful everyday mama and Adi time!
i think it looks great. and what a story you will be able to share with her about her first haircut, hehe.
Looks like a fantastic haircut! She looks adorable!
What? I love that cut! She's so adorable.
she is super adorable! love the new 'do!
Sharilyn she looks so cute! Not cute is the haircut my mom gave me during a Florida vacation with crooked, patchy, 1/2 inch bangs and a splotchy red sunburn on my face. I swear I saw people shaking their heads in pity :)
she looks beautiful!
a great hair cut, well done mummy.
I look back at the first hair cuts I gave Esme and all I see is the milestone of a baby girl who has hair long enough to trim. Like everyone else has said, she looks so beautiful! Really, really lovely. Good job mama!
She looks precious. And my daughter hates to have her hair washed too. For months we've just gone with a good rinse (just water, no shampoo). It's gentler and you could never tell we didn't use shampoo.
I have done exactly the same thing! Afterall when you can sew and create all manner of things, surely a haircut cannot be that hard. And, I told myself, I am good with scissors. Yeah right!
I think that her hair looks gorgeous though and I love that choppy, short fringe look. Character I say!
By the way, I love your blog.
She is soooo adorable!
You did an excellent job! She looks absolutely perfect.
She is such a cute little lady!!!
she looks beautiful!!!
I love it + plus I'm astonished how much she looks like you with her new haircut! isn't it lovely?
She's adorable....whatever style hairdo she's sporting.
Blessings,
Spencer
