a march give-away

A couple of weeks ago, I met up with the small company with whom I will be working with on the re-release of my address files. We went over and approved samples, talked numbers and dates, took a look at their work and discussed my own products and new ideas.

I am so incredibly excited to be able to have my address files, all beautiful, made sustainably, and in both maple and black walnut woods, available again within the next 2-3 months. Right now I am awaiting one more sample from them, and once approved I shall be able to make my address files once more for my wonderful customers!

I will be going through my address files wait-list over the next few weeks, sorting through it and contacting people to check on in with them. If you are wanting to order an address file from me, please send your information to me at Sharilyn AT lovelydesign DOT com!

a march give-away by you.

But this excitement and anticipation also comes with anxiety and fear. I have actually been having nightmares, in which others steal my work and ideas and I helplessly stand by like a fool. And in these dreams when I speak up all I hear is: "It's your own damn fault. You did nothing."

But how am I ever going to manage? I am so excited and I really am inspired to re-launch my little lovelydesign company fully, with all sorts of new products that I have been dreaming up and working on. I am still setting up my new studio space and it is beginning to feel cozy and inspiring. But without help or resources, I literally can't do this when I have Adelaide with me full-time. There is just no way I can properly do both.

Which left me considering child-care options today. There is a daycare right across the lane from our home, but (of course) it is not cheap and the wait-list is years long. I looked up childcare on craigslist and I felt like I was going to throw-up. I know people do it everyday, but leaving Addie with strangers... I just don't know if I can ever do it.

It feels so unfair.. that just I can't seem to have both.

But I feel positive and inspired. I will try to find a solution, so I can have both. Maybe I can just work on Saturdays. Maybe I can find a great nanny who will love Addie so much and will take care of her one day a week. I don't know. But I'm gonna try.

a march give-away by you.

I've missed my projects, and blogging the past few weeks, while I try to sort all of these things out, and so this afternoon I decided to have another giveaway here, to thank you all for your amazing support, and to cheer up and give myself a little bit of hope!

For one of you now, I have this address file that I've put together with a hopeful heart. It is practically perfect, except that it is of unfinished maple. I've decided to leave the wood untouched, but if you wish you can rub a little beeswax or such on it. Or you can simply leave it plain, it is kind of nice that way. It is filled with well over 200 (3.5" stacked) hand cut cards, most from recycled stock such as old library cards and ledgers. There are also many patterned cards which I've designed myself and had printed on recycled paper. It is made with a lot of love!

My wish is that it will find its way to a good home. If you would like to have it, please leave me a comment and I will randomly draw a winner in a week or so.

note: If you sign in as anonymous, please leave a name in your comment so I can identify you.

I definitely don't know how early childhood education works where you are but I must say that the teachers are strangers for a very short time. 99% of the time they are there because they love and value children and therefore are the most awesome people for your kiddo to grow up with.

And they never supersede you guys as loving parents.

Maybe the one over the road isn't the answer... but if you need something, you'll find it.

Good luck!

I'm so excited to hear that you are starting up your shop again. I really hope you will be producing your pinecone poster again - I love it. As well, I love to own one of your address files too.

It is so hard as a mother to make these choices between those who we love and the things we love to do. I hope that you will find the right balance for you.

I just found your blog this weekend and it totally made my weekend to spend time looking at it. I too have a a little independent business (make plushies) and a child and I can totally empathize with your struggle to find the right balance. Keep working at it and you will find something that works for you and your daughter.

I'm so excited for you, Sharilyn! I'm thrilled that lovely design is going to be back up and running. I can't imagine the pressures of motherhood and work, but I'm sure you will elegantly find a balance between the two.

I would love to win one of these. It's wonderful to see you starting up again! (I'm sure you'll find the right arrangement with your daughter. I've had good luck with having a mother's helper, someone who comes and plays with my kids when I work - but if I'm really needed, I'm close by.)

There is a lovely Tibetan woman who just opened a daycare on Capitol Hill (the #135 would get you there). She was my first choice for my daughter, but it didn't work out. If you're interested, let me know and I'll pass on her contact info.

I've enjoyed reading your blog and admiring your designs. I must confess to coveting your lifestyle just a wee bit.

Great to hear all the upcoming changes! I understand the fear, but that just means great things are around the corner! I'm throwing my hat in the ring to try and win this prize you are offering! As for the workload, what if you put out the "feelers" for an intern to come and help you? Perhaps if you find someone to care for Addie one or two days a week, you would be able to team up with someone else (an intern or pay a student minimum wage) to help you with the "assembly" portion of your work? Just a thought. I know you'll make magic happen. :)

Chloe said...

i have been waiting for this news! so glad you will be back at it. best of luck balancing it all!

Roostew said...

I have only just started reading your blog, and it is lovely. Such beautiful ideas, and a precious little girl as well!! It is hard to make the decision to leave your little one in someone else's care, but I also believe in a balance between your mummy life and your creative life - it is the only thing that has kept me sane!! But at the end of the day, trust your instincts. I would love to be entered into your giveaway.

Sarah said...

The work/child divide is never something you get overly entirely (well, at least not while they are home)...but elementary school makes that tension a whole lot easier. Take it easy on yourself...you only have five years. Unless you decide to homeschool and then you have forever. Anyway, I'd love the address file. And I never win ANYTHING!

Nali P. said...

I'm in love with lovely designs. I could really use an address file.

I hope everything works out for you and wish you the best on finding someone to care for your little one.

How do we get everything - if you figure it out, please let me know. I think you're amazing trying to get the balance right - I've kind of put some of my aspirations on hold until Leila starts school (which is still 3 years away) - so I don't have to manage too much more guilt in my days!

I think you'll know when it feels right, in terms of childcare, I think things happen for a reason so why not hope for the ideal arrangement to just show itself. In the meantime, the address box is gorgeous and I'd love to enter your draw.

I love the colors and design of your address file! I had considered buying a boring rolodex, but this is way more fun :)

As for childcare. I babysat for a little girl who was a little younger than your child one summer. During the first week the mother was home too and it was nice having her around to help me learn what her child did/did not like. Then if she had to run errands she knew that I was able to properly care for her child. Just know that child care can come to you instead of you leaving your child with someone else. Good look with whatever you decide. It will be the right thing for you.

And I would love, love, love one of your beautiful address files!

Warmest wishes as you seek out childcare for your darling wee one. I stay at home too, so I understand how grueling it can be to consider leaving your precious one with a stranger...but there are some really wonderful, loving people out there. I will hope you will find each other and Addie will receive the best of both worlds, including a loving Mama who is satisfied to be fulfilling all her goals.

It's particularly hard to find a balance between work life and home life. But don't forget that kids thrive around other people. They develop social skills that benefit them in the long run. I know, I know, they are only small for so long. But also think of the benefits of just 'being you'!

I love your work by the way.....

Yay! So excited to hear your address files will be available soon. Congratulations!

I recently completed the hunt for childcare for my 1 yr old daughter. Even after years on those waiting lists in Vancouver. (My heart goes out to you. Finding childcare here is tough but luckily not impossible.) This week is our transition week. I know in the end, I'll be a better mom for being able to persue my creative/professional goals too. Good luck!

freshmd said...

I'm not sure how closely you looked into the daycare across the street, but if you want part time and are flexible with days the wait may be much shorter than you think. That's been my own experience!

Wow that is exciting news. It is so hard to work out what the right thing to do with regards to work, child care etc is, we have been going through the same thing with my 8 month old little girl. Luckily for me, my mum lives close enough to look after her 1 day a week for us.

to have one of your filing systems would be so lovely.

I found a daycare mum (she happened to live just around the corner from me) for my children. My youngest started for one day a week when she was 7 months old and finished last year at the age of 4. having that one day...it became two...kept my creative urges under control. I was able to touch base with all my ideas to make and do. the downside is once you start you get more ideas and more desire to create.

But just one day a week is bliss. Having a daycare mum was a perfect environment compared to a daycare centre. You can always apply and say no later if you don't feel 100% happy.

I feel very happy for you that you are going back to making your wonderful things. I really admire the fact that you have taken care of Adelaide by yourself for so long instead of putting her in daycare, because in this day and age, the sad reality is that we are too busy to look after our kids and watch them grow up and experience their first steps/words/etc. Good Luck with finding the right person for your beautiful girl.

This country soooo needs a government-subsidized universal childcare system! Good luck with whatever childcare solution you find... Have you looked into any sort of "kid-swapping"? I would relly encourage you to look at child care for one or two days a week. We've been doing a nanny share for the past 18 months with a lovely nanny who adores the children she works with. Sharing one nanny between two families reduces the costs for you and gives your daughter a playmate. Or she may enjoy a nursery school for a few mornings a week more than you think. You'll have some creative time to yourself that I'm sure will be very rewarding to you both. Good luck!

Yay you!!
I feel as though I know exactly where you are right now. My son is three and I've been trying to get him into "preschool" since he was about 18 months. It's the hardest thing in the world for me to do... letting strangers take complete care of him for multiple hours a week. It hurts and feels wrong. But, I know I am such a better mama when I get some time to do what I love. If I had a tribe, with multiple generations of women who could share my burdens, and I theirs, it would be a different story. This being everything for our kids, attending to their every emotional, physical, spiritual, psychological, experiential need is a tremendous goal. We do it out of love and because it's the kind of mama we want our kids to have.. but it's the farthest thing from easy. And our communities are just not set up to support us.
I don't have an answer for you... just a "I know it's hard. I hear you."
Your daughter is beautiful. Your work is beautiful, and I admire you for both.

Ok, first off, I'll com to Canada one day a week and watch A for you just to be able to buy one of your address files. Second, the best advice I can give you in use a university student. Our local school has a place you can post an ad for current students for specific days of the week, etc. and it's great. I've found all of my babysitters like that. Last, you are such a talent that no matter what you decide to do, your daughter {and any future kiddos} are going to be so proud of you that this time away from you will be nothing! But, I do understand how hard it is to leave her. Good luck!

I really feel for you at this time and know exactly how you feel. I really need to go back to work financially, but like you, everytime I attempt to research child-care in the area I feel ill. Isn't it so sad how in this day we are so torn? I wish I had a solution for you & myself, but I don't. I guess we have to go with our gut feelings and try to find a compromise somewhere. Good luck Sharilyn.

Having childcare is a difficult decision. However, for me I have found that having some of my own time makes me a better mother when I am with my child. I have also found that I think it sets a good example for your child for them to see the independent work you are capable of doing and one day they should hope to be as successful and creative as you.

Would love one of your address files, will have to buy one if I don't win the give away.
Thanks,
Melissa

The file is truly lovely! I would be grateful and thrilled to win.

On the childcare front, I has similar feelings as you and ended up finding a wonderful situation. I share an awesome nanny with another family. She comes to our house in the mornings and plays with my son while I work and then goes to the other family in the afternoon. The half day is just enough time for me to be productive, give my son some super fun play time, and yet I don't miss the whole day with him. And having someone come to your home alleviates much of the stress of a stranger watching your sweet babe.

Good luck in finding a situation that works for you!

Finding the right balance is especially hard in the beginning. But don;t forget that your daughter will benefit from seeing her Mom create and work independently. She will have the best of both worlds. It is difficult, but you will find a way. Good Luck!

I found an in home child care center for my almost two year old Lucie. There are only 3-4 kids at once, the owner is a mother and very lovely. And it is very affordable. You could call local private elementaries to ask for referrals (Waldorf or Montessori's) or find a yahoo group for parents in your area.

I live in Kalamazoo Michigan and here there is a yahoo group that emphasizes attachment parenting.

Congratulations on getting back to what you love! Your work really shows how much energy and passion you put into it. Your design files are beautiful and I would love to put one on my desk.

My sister is a designer as well and found herself in the same position a couple of years ago. She hired a babysister to come to the house for a couple of hours a day a few times a week and watch her son downstairs while she worked in her studio upstairs. She was able to get work done and not worry about leaving him with a stranger, because she sould simply walk down and check on him when she wanted. I'm sure that you will figure out someway to fulfill both of your desires.

joanna said...

you will find a solution that works - - it's difficult, but i truly believe finding a balance is important. It's hard to be in mama mode all of the time and you will feel so good getting back to doing what you love, and then enjoy even more the time you spend with adelaide.

I have found quite a few address files on etsy that are very similar or almost exactly the same as yours. But - I fell in love with yours (and your blog, your love for your daughter and the work you do) first and I've been patiently waiting until you've been able to make and sell them again! (I'm going to email you so you can add me to your waitlist).

In the meantime, I'd love to win one (as I want so many of them! One for contacts, one for addresses, one as a memory box for my son... etc!) :)

catie said...

hi sharilyn,

i'm smitten with this beautiful, functional address file. please enter me in your giveaway.

a couple things you mentioned today...

wait-lists (even those that other parents put their children on before they were even born!) often have a way of opening up at just the right time. a daycare across the lane would be worth the extra cost for your peace of mind and being able to walk vs. drive. let them know you are interested and check in often.

if you do end up having to leave your sweet girl with "strangers", remind yourself that they are friends you haven't made yet. your daughter will bring many friendships to you.

about your fear of having your ideas stolen... i've been reading a new earth by eckhart tolle. he has much to say about the ego's attachment to things and ideas. this might be something to consider if you are having trouble feeling at peace. your work is so beautiful - others will emulate it. think of it more as you are inspiring others and spreading the goodness around.

you are so sweet to share your dreams and fears so openly. good things will come your way.

warmly,
catie

i am a firm believer of doing both and the right solution will be waiting for you when you least expect it. i am SUPER excited that you found a partner and can relaunch your lovely address files. i am still pining for one! :)

I wish we lived closer then Addie could come and play with Hugo for the day. I do believe you need to do this. You need to decide on a caregiver for you daughter so you will have time to be your creative self. I believe you'll be a better Mother in the long run for making this little sacrifice. Plus, Addie may just make new friends she'll love! Good luck.

I would be honored to own one of your address files. They are beautiful and the love shows through them.
Have you considered finding a mommy from a mommy and me play group to watch Miss Addie one day a week? Are there groups like this in your area? And then maybe you could return the favor one day a week.

By the way, the childcare thing is very hard. The best option for me was to have someone come into our home. We got very lucky and it worked out perfectly. I hope someone emerges for you who makes you feel so comfortable so you are able to be free to create. Best of luck.

Childcare is a tricky thing. I got sick to my stomach thinking about it for my youngest kiddo, but I'm a firm believer in everything working itself out. My best advice, just go with your gut. And congrats on getting back into the swing of things!

pick me! hehe :) oh, i will surely buy one if i am not picked. i know you will find an answer that works for you that will help make all your troubles go away. maybe you can hire an assistant, partly to help you with your projects and partly to care for adelaide?

I would love to own one of your beautiful files!

As to childcare, I felt the same way you're feeling now when I went back to work. I think the best way to find a daycare or care provide is through the recommendations of those you trust.

I found that many of my fears were unfounded. Yes, I have less time with her, but I do think that some time apart is good for us both. It lets me re-charge my batteries and interact with other adults. And my daughter loves the interaction with all the other kids her age, which is something that she needs. That said, it will defintely be hard at first (but probably a lot more for you than for her).

Best wishes!
