Lately I've been wondering what to give to Adelaide's little friends at her birthday party this coming Sunday. I really am not fond of purchasing items that are eventually going to end up in a dumpster somewhere, and so I wanted to try to give the children something that hopefully they will be able to use and enjoy beyond a sunday afternoon birthday party. And I also wanted to try and make the goodies myself using inexpensive materials that I had on hand.
Because I've had several parents ask me about Adelaide's favourite crayons - a kind of children's wax and oil based crayon from Japan - I got the idea to give out small packs of these crayons in the birthday goodie bags. And then I realised that I could make small children's scribbler books to go along with them!
To make the scribble books, I first scanned in some animals from the pages of one of Adelaide's colouring books that I picked up at Daiso for $2 but it is completely unmarked besides pictures and a bit of Japanese text. I wish that I made the illustrations myself - they are so very sweet! However, I did not due to lack of time and because these little books are for gifts and won't be sold.

After scanning in several animals - Monkeys, Dolphins, Squirrels, Lions, Otters, and Penguins - I made a layout simply in photoshop using the typefaces Giddyup and Neutraface. And I added alphabets in both capital and lower-case letters on the back cover, too. Once Designed, I printed out on my desktop printer many covers onto random coloured card stock pages.
For the insides, I chose simple multi-coloured paper, along with some kraft, manila, and interlined paper as well. I randomly sorted them in stacks of 8 sheets, and along with a cover folded them in half to make 16 page books. Then, using a long-armed stapler (which I simply asked to borrow from my mom's work for a few days) I stapled the center fold line of each book twice.
I then added a length of librarian's book tape to the spine. With an xacto knife, I measured out 3/4" from the spine edge of the cover and marked two small marks with the blade. Then matching up the edge of the tape to the marks I laid the tape down, and then flipped and pressed it to the backside of the book. Last, using my Fiskars rotary paper cutter, I trimmed down the books to their final size - about 5x7"- and rounded the corners with my corner rounder. All Done!
These books are so incredibly simple and quick to make that I hope maybe you will make some for your little ones, too. They'd be great to kept in a small bag along with some crayons, ready for when you go out to a restaurant or coffee shop. Hopefully they can keep little ones occupied for even a short while!
But, I made too many! I have about a dozen or so leftover books that I'd like to give away. If you have or know a little one who would like to have a couple of them, please leave a comment and I will randomly select six or so children to send them to. Which animals would they choose? Which would you?

ps. Thank-you all so much for your many comments and sweet words. I have now gone through all the comments for my children's book giveaway, and I have tried my best to pick winners by matching their animal preferences with what books I had left. And the winners are:
Christine
Valerie
Tracey
Andrea Soos
LOLO+SPROUT
Alex
Joanna
The Flower Maiden
Julie E
If you are a winner and you haven't heard from me yet, please send me your mailing information so I can send your new book(s) to you!

OMG, would you please come and move in with me and craft all day? Those are darling! I would LOVE to give those for my daughter's birthday this summer. I wish you were going to sell them! Lillie would love to have the penguin, dolphin, monkey or lion book! She loves to color. What are these crayons you're speaking of? Sound fun!
I'm at a loss for what to give for her pool party birthday in June. Any ideas?

What a very clever idea. I'm sure my little niece Carryn would love a monkey book. That's her nickname, "little monkely"
Thanks for adding me to your giveaway.

What a great idea!!! I have two little girls who would love the dolphin and otter- they are great fans of sea creatures of all kinds. :)
I especially love the taped spine touch! Perfect.
I think I may have commented once before on your blog. I love it. Something about it is so soothing and refreshing to me. Maybe it's the colors, your sweet Adelaide, or your great projects and activities. Thanks so much for sharing.
Those books are pretty much the cutest. My little 'H' man would roar for the lion and puff out his cheeks for the monkey.
Best
My little boy Adrien would love one of those books! If he could choose he would say, Monkey, Squirrel or Otter. I would say any, they are all gorgeous! I would love to make them myself, but it sounds far too technical for me, I will leave it to the expert.
oh they are so sweet! carson would love the monkey or the penguin book! he loves telling stories and illustrating...
these are fantastic!
andrea
Lovely books & thanks for the tutorial. My cousin would love this. I think he'd go for the monkeys, but I'd go for the otters!
My son would love any of them--he loves animals!
These are such a great idea! I love that you are giving usable gifts as opposed to toys with a short use span and a long lifespan in the dump. My nieces would love these. One is obsessed with penguins and the other is a little monkey. Thanks for sharing.
Those are so cute! I would choose the monkey for my son because he reminds me of one because he's so active.
the dolphins and monkeys are calling my name! you are so creative, i also hate those cheap plastic toys that are thrown out after the party. i would love to give these to my nephew (and keep one for me!)
these little books are lovely
They are all adorable! Great idea!
My boy would LOVE LOVE LOVE the otters or the squirrels. Two favorites at our house.
Those are WAY too cute. You should be pretty pleased with yourself for coming up with such adorable and USABLE party favors.
You are such an inspiration! These are fabulous. My son would love to color these - especially the monkeys or lions!
I love these. My guy used to be a "lion" now he is more of a "dolphin". A real swimmer. I think they are all great...soooo cute.
My little guys would love the monkey or penguins (I think they all are adorable!). These are a great idea for the wait before the food comes at a restaurant!
This is about the cutest idea ever for a birthday party gift. Thank you! I would love to receive a book so I have have a first hand example to try to make something similar of my own. My boy Liam is very close in age to your daugheter, he is 19.5 months now and would love any animal, but is especially fascinated with otters.
Elizabeth
These are fantastic- my nieces and nephews would love any of them. I especially love the monkey, penguin and dolphin books
You make it sound so easy to produce such a fabulous little treat like this. I love how you reference everything with links and name the typeface that you use. I am a font freak and so appreciate that.
I have a little four year old that has discovered drawing in a HUGE way. She'd love one of these little books. What was the original colouring book?
I would send these to my nephew, Jonas, who is three and loves animals. He's been visiting the zoo and identifying animals since before he could talk (he named the animals using sign language!)
They're so lovely!
hi,
cute books/ idea! my little boy would love one.
thanks,
cara
good lord, lady. you are so good it makes my head hurt a little.
What a cute idea. I love the monkey.
Such a great idea! My Nico turned two yesterday (Feb. 9th) and my 4 year old, Mikey, both love to color. It's their favorite activity, actually. :) They are very sweet boys, and would appreciate and cover. They are not picky, and neither am I.
Great job! :)
They are darling and such a wonderful idea! I think parents really appreciate gifts with such thought and purpose. The squirrel book would be a hit around here.
Please, oh please move on down to NY and be my neighbor! Hugo would flip for any ole animal cover you might choose! His 3rd birthday is in April and I need all the ideas I can get. Thank you for your continued inspiration.
All I can say is WOW. You have such good ideas!! My little G would love these. I wouldn't mind taking them to class either! They are all so cute. I love the lion and monkey.

ines
this is so sweet! i'm not entering my name because i don't know of any little kids, but i just wanted to say that these are too cool!
Those are so precious! You are so talented :)
I posted my comment without telling you about the possible recipient of the lovely books -- I just had lunch with her and her mother and she very much needed a little book to scribble in. Lunches can be sooo boring. She is almost five (75 days to go - a fact we established during lunch) and her name is Amelia and she is very clever and sweet. My little one is still too little I think (not quite 8 months!) but he'll have cray-pas in his future that is for sure. Sounds like Addy will have a super fab party.
As always, you are so creative! I love the little squirrels, and I think my children would love them as well.
hello
the notebooks are really cute. i might try and make a similar thing for myself.
i had those crayons as i kid and i remember i loved their texture. :)
These are so darling! I have no kids of my own but work with special needs children who would adore these notebooks! They are all beautiful.
Katie
i wish i was your daughter! margot would love these!
ooh I have a few little scribblers who would love a little scribbler! Especially my princess who spends hours and hours with her crayons and whatever surface she can use them on.
I'm inspired by your work....I wish I was as creative. I would love these books for my son, my niece and my nephew!!
These books are lovely, the monkeys are especially cute. Love the idea of working with what you've already got. I'm in charge of Valentine favors for a class of first graders this week and I think I will be borrowing your idea. Thank you!
How clever! I am as always inspired.
My little one would adore one of your books, but who wouldn't? ;)
Love them.
Chris
So cute! My daughter would love the lions as she is cat crazy even though (and probably because) we have 4 whacky dogs...
How lovely! My niece, Jordyn, loves to color with Cray-Pas. The otter is soooo cute.
My boyfriend's little brother LOVES to color; I made him a coloring book using family pictures in Photoshop for Christmas, but he doesn't want to color it because it's his family and he thinks it should be a memory book (despite our assertions to the contrary). So I'd love to give him one of these lovelies instead!
Thanks for giving these away!
Oh, wow! These books are just sweet. Everything you do is just sweet! My daughter would love one of these books to journal her thoughts and sketches in.
You're so generous!
saradegrace@hotmail.com

p.s. being part japanese, i grew up on cray-pas, so your daughter has awesome taste.!
arigatou gozaimasu.!

My youngest boy are all into animals now - all kinds of animals, so he'd be thrilled to win one of these :)
These are wonderful books! As always, you seem to have considered and perfected every little aspect of the design. Truly lovely!

These are so darling. And would so come in handy for my two little ones. They are particulary fond of monkeys and squirrels
Your books are so adorable! I've been wanting to make books like that for some time and just never know where to start. Today I'm off to the store for supplies! Thanks for the inspiration and how to!

Hello, I couldn't find an email address for you, so I will ask my question to you here, hope you don't mind. I was looking at the quilt you made for your daughter and want to make one similar for my son. You mention that you used natural muslin, but the muslin I find is very thin and quite unsuitable for a quilt, can you advise me on what type to use? Thank you for your help.
Sorry I forgot to leave my email address: dasspart@hotmail.com
What a cute idea! My son's bday is today and I wanted to avoid the goodie bags for his party, but ran out of time/steam to do anything creative so I went the crappy toy destined for landfill route. I may have to try something like this in June for my other son's birthday.
You inspire me. My son is a few months younger than Adelaide and I have learned so much from you. Thank you dearly from one mama to another.
My little monkey would love one of these!!!
-Angela
My little sister would LOVE one of these! She is just learning to speak and loves when I read her animal books!
utterly obsessed! i would use them at work...and be completely okay with it! xo
These are so great! I love the squirrels, penguins, and seals and they'd be a perfect gift for a little someone I know :) Thanks for such a nice giveaway!
My 4-year old son who LOVES animals and now loves to write would absolutely adore your scribblers! What a wonderful idea and craft.
Oh my nieces would LOVE these! They love all things animal! Those squirrels are so dang cute - all of them are!
Oh, I just love this idea! I teach high school art, so don't get to make such cute goodies often.
My entry into your giveaway is for my 2 nephews and niece in Israel. They are in Kindergarten and preschool and their schools don't have many resources at all. The kids bring scrap paper from home to do their homework on, drawing and writing on the backs of used paper. I would love to be able to send their preschool something as lovely as your books to draw in, or at least my little nephews and nieces.
Thank you for your generosity, your heart is big and your imagination full.
Everything you do is so lovely. I wish I had just an ounce of your creativity. My oldest daughter Lila would adore one of these books, that is after I kept it for myself for a few months to just admire it's adorableness - is that a word? It is now.
My Emma would love a book. She enjoys drawing and scribbling. I am always looking for something she can do while in the car. Thank you for sharing your creativity.
Those are great! What a fab idea. My kids are always looking for notebooks to write their secrets in.
My two little nieces would love these.
Exquisite books! And you just created them. I admire you for that! Beautiful.
My niece and nephews would adore me if I gave them these!!!
Please tell me you didn't round the corners on each and every inside page....aughhhhh
As always, your concepts are sweetly perfect.
But no Canada link for the librarian tape?
great idea! I would love to make books like this. Thanks for posting the directions.
That way we can make some if we don't win.
We have 3 kids that love to color and we like all animals
great idea! I would love to make books like this. Thanks for posting the directions.
That way we can make some if we don't win.
We have 3 kids that love to color and we like all animals but the penguins and squirrels are especially cute!
These are so lovely! I would love to have these for my own children, however with the recent bush fires in southern Australia I realise that there are so many children who have lost everything. Sooooo, if I win the giveaway I would like to donate them to Meet Me At Mikes (http://meetmeatmikes.blogspot.com) who is collecting hand made items for those who have lost so much. Cheers!
These are so sweet! My girls would love them. And what a great idea for favors.
I know a little two year old named Olivia that would love these! She is already so creative! I am sure she would love all of the animals, but I bet her favorite would be squirrels and lions. So sweet of you to offer!
Absolutely adorable and a wonderful idea for kiddos! I love the monkeys just cuz, the otters because they hold hands, the dolphins because they are such amazing animals... heck though, they're all so dang cute!
I don't have kids (yet ;) but many of my friends do. I'd be a very popular Auntie Em if I handed these out!

These books are adorable. My two children are still babies, but I would love to hand some out to the little ones in my Church, or play group! So creative.

wow...those are so great and adorable!!
I did a lot of craft projects with my little one too. My little really enjoys that. your little one is so lucky to have a mom like you!!
These are adorable and look so professional. What book did you get them from. I would love to have them up on my craft room wall :P My son however I know would LOVE to have a book or two. He is never without a pencil and paper. Any animal would be loved However mama is partial to squirrels :P
Thank you for sharing. I love these! I want one...or all of them. I know my daughter would love to practice her words and draw some bunnies in one of these. But then her brother would probably want one too. I think she would choose the squirrel or maybe the otter? (I would ask her but it is almost midnight). My son would like the monkey one. Have a lovely party!
These are darling! I work with low-income kids, and I know they would love these books too. Thanks for some much needed inspiration.
Thank you so much for sharing all the steps for this with us - these books are just great! If you know, could you please tell me the name of Adelaide's colouring book where you got the pictures, or where it is from? It looks like a great one for animal loving kids.
Thank you - and thank you for your blog generally I really love it - it really, really makes me smile.
donnhann@yahoo.com
ahhh, the sweetness is unbearable! those are the cute wee books. she's so very lucky. she might be a little young for it, but does adelaide like books from the golden imprint? my parents used to buy workbooks (math, phonics, etc) and they had the best drawings and stickers. these images remind me of those workbooks.
these are beautiful! you are SO talented. I would choose the monkey one-so cute! Kai would choose the squirrel one i think..she loves watching the squirrels from our windows at the moment. so kind of you to offer them up to giveaway! thank you!
What a simple and wonderful idea. These remind me of the small workbooks I scribbled in when I was a kid -- except these are much more lovely to look at! My daughter would probably make a beeline toward the lion and the squirrel, and I would make a similar beeline toward the otters!
Beautiful little books. Please put my name in the hat for a little book. I'd love to give one to my niece when she comes over for a sleep over weekend! Many thanks!
Love the penguins super cute. Thanks for the idea.

Hi,
these books look adorable! I'm writing you from Germany so I don't know wether it's possible to receive some but my son would love them. He really likes monkeys: every evening before he goes to bed he jumps on our arms and tells us to carry him like a monkey.Me I love them all but especially the squirrels. You have done a wonderful job.
Anna Larissa
You are so very talented. Thank you for sharing how you made them, so inspiring. Adelaide's friends are going to be thrilled. My little stan (19 months)absolutely loves penguins ever since we discovered the animation and book 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers. Do you know it? Thank you for the give-away.
Oh, such a lovely design, as usual! They have a sweet vintage feel to them :) I'd never be able to choose- they are all so cute!
they are so amazing. you make it all sound so easy. you really should sell them.
my two little boys would love them. i love the squirel but i know they would love the lion and the monkey or the dolphins. heck-they would love any of them!
These are adorable!! What an amazing idea. Can you come to Portland in June for my daughter's birthday party?! ;-) I think that she might choose the squirrel or dolphin. Just lovely!
I want to make these books! Did you use a scrapbook corner rounder, or something else? So so cute.
You are crazy talented and you make it seem so simple! Adorable!

These are wonderfully cute!
Lovely books, lovely idea!
I would like to do something similar for my son's 2nd birthday in June, but here it is colder in the south in June. Maybe I can make them with Australian animals....
Have a happy Birthday Adelaide!
My daughter Ophelia is a big fan of penguins and monkeys :0) So blinkin' creative!
these are so precious. you are so creative and i love how you use what you have on hand and come up with something amazing. you are such an inspiration to me. thanks for always being so free with sharing your ideas.
Dear Sharilyn,
Your blog has inspired me to do a "art" themed birthday party for my daughter "Addie's" first birthday in May (My daughter's name is Addison, but we also call her Addie, just like yours!). The theme will be "cupcakes and colors" and each child will receive a waist apron, and we are having a "color buffet" (inspired by your tray of coloring goodies for Adelaide) in which they can select art "tools" to fill their aprons with. We are also having a play clay station (inspired by your play clay date). I was also thinking of making our own notepads, since they are economical, and when I saw this blog on your homemade scribble books, I was floored! They are SO incredibly cute and I wish I could do the same. Unfortunately I am not nearly as talented as you. Anyhow, if our name is drawn through serendipity, my own little Addie would be so lucky to have such whimsical scribble book! She particularly is drawn to penguins and always enjoys staring at her penguin touch and feel flashcard :o)
Thank you for always inspiring me, as a mommy :o)
-shandis
Hello, I just have to say Adelaide is the cutest!!! She is one lucky girl to have a crafty mom like you. My birthday is the same day and i have to say red and blue is one of my favorite color combos too. Happy Birthday
Jasper would love a book. He is not drawing yet and would probably love to eat the book . I am sure when he is bigger him and his dad ( Ben ) would fill it with get drawings together. Lovin the squirrel.
Love Dawn
Happy Birthdat Addie
What an outrageously brilliant concept! My son turns three in a month and I think I'll get hubby to try and do something similar - fantastic!
These little books are gorgeous - my little 2 year old niece loves drawing and would really appreciate one (that is if you are willing to post it all the way over to the UK)
Thanks so much for the idea - I may well end up making some myself :-)
I have been searching for party favor ideas as my daughters fourth birthday is a month away! Great idea!
She would love monkeys or penguins!
oh gosh they are adorable. i know a little boy who would love one - so would his muma!
These are fantastic. The illustrations you used are just darling.
I want to Steal this idea for the bday party I am hosting for my niece, such a great favor to give out!!
my friend Halcyon is almost two and she loves to make lion noises. If I were choosing, I would pick otters because I love their playfulness
Oh, the Craypas! I grew up on those! Love them.. I was pretty horrified when I first came to America and tried Crayola.. Anyway, these are so cute! Thank you for all the font information, too. I actually just wanted to comment about Craypas but I will not refuse one of these gems if I get selected. I will make sure to save it for my future niece. Well, not if it's the penguin one. ^^
hello, i recently found your lovely blog and i love it so much. i wish i had that lovely idea, imagination, and creativity like you do.
sora
These are great. I can imagine a few parents keeping them for themselves. My daughter is just turning one and we're looking forward to the colouring days ahead. We'll have to check out the cray-pas products. All of the animals are charming and I don't think I can pick just one.
geez girl, even if they are not your illustrations you've most certainly got an eye for design. too bad, so sad they won't be sold but lucky for the little party goers. weeee.
You have such wonderful, beautiful ideas! The big coloring fan in our house would love the monkeys and the penguins.
so sweet and lovely. i've been wanting to make some little jotting books and this demo helps me so much. i would LOVE a little scribbler for my little one (who doesn't yet scribble - he's one, but who does have a mama with a secret mystery drawer of crafts for future use). :-)
I have two girls and on both of their first visits to the zoo both found their favourite animal to be the otter. I think it's probably because they were, on both occasions, by far the most active of critters - so that's what we'd choose. They're gorgeous too and although I'm printerless at home, something we shall try in one form or another.
love the books! please add me to the list for the drawing.
thanks!
These books are so adorable!
sorry... forgot to say which ones my little Lily would love to color on.... probably the otter or the lion. how could you ever pick though? they are all so sweet!
My little 16 month old would love one of these adorable books! They are so cute. I always get inspiration from your blog -- thank you!

I have loved these ever since you posted them and am just about to attempt my own version of them for my son's 6th birthday party favors. Hope they turn out half as lovely as yours!
I will sincerely say you actually establish some outstanding ideas and I will post a number of good ideas to add to briefly.
