a sewing space

We moved here into this home almost a year ago already, and I have been trying to get everything sorted out and all organised ever since. Lastly is my little workroom. Its been difficult to get things to work in such a small room (I believe it is about 80 square feet or less) but slowly and with compromises I have been getting it together.
One of my goals with my workroom is to have a dedicated place to sew, since I am doing quite a bit of that these days, and also because I am hoping that my little daughter will pick up this and other interests from me. Usually when I get a bit of sewing done, she is at my feet working on her little projects: arranging her scraps of fabrics, or drawing with her pencils and markers. I hope to be able to fit a small desk here for her, too, somehow.

sewing space by you.
Since the room is so small, I decided to make the closet into another place to work. I find that my closets just end up shoved full of junk if I am not careful, so I removed the standard bi-fold doors and the unattractive shelf and clothes rack that was inside to leave an open nook. I lined the back of the closet with some vintage tree wallpaper that I had found at a thrift shop years ago and was waiting for the perfect project to use. I didn't actually glue the paper to the wall, but rather just used some thumbtacks to hang it up! I then hung 3 ikea lack wall shelves for storage. I measured out the space and at a hardware store had them cut to size a remnant board to make a desktop. I used some table legs from ikea to form the desk, and covered it with heavy kraft paper. I am still considering covering the desktop with linen or other fabric one day, once I find the perfect yardage.

I have yet to find a brilliant method to storing fabrics, so finally I decided to simply sort them by colour and stack them up on my highest shelf. This has worked well as I can stand back and peek at them all at once, but they are out of the way so they don't get messed up easily.

I also added a small desk lamp, but because this closet is next to a window, on left, there is a lot of nice natural light to work by.
work wall by you.
p.s. thankyou to all who have posted in response to making tree quilts with me. If you would like to receive some of my green pieces for your own quilt, please send me an email at sharilyn at lovelydesign . com with your mailing address and I will mail you a little package! Other supplies you should have to make this quilt are a sewing machine, rotary cutter with a clear quilting ruler and cutting mat, other green and brown fabric pieces, and some muslin or other light coloured fabric.

I just love that closet space. It's perfect. And you even have two little trees pinned to the wall. That's the best use of a cupboard I've seen yet.

I love yr sewing space! This past weekend, my 8 yr old & I converted our craft & jewelry studio to cater more for our sewing projects. She's 8 & started sewing recently. Now we've a separate sewing table & a cutting table which is really nice! Plus, my husband set up the laptop next to my sewing machine where I'm now writing to you. I can't post any pics yet as we are still not completed with our sorting & throwing!

I love your sewing space. Where did you get the thread spool rack? I have not been able to find one. My spools of thread are in a basket in a tangled mess!!

Such a beautiful little space, so inspirational and your idea to give trees is utterly charming. I would love tips on buying a sewing machine, what kind do you use? I want to start quilting and sewing but am a little stuck regarding choosing a sewing machine, your thoughts and advice would really be appreciated!

What a great use of a small space. Our current home leaves only tiny spaces for my sewing, as well; it's a bit of a fun challenge to make it work, isn't it. :)

And I adore that wallpaper. Sheesh.

Love it! Me and my husband moved from NYC to rural Ohio in January and we still have to organize our work space! It's driving me crazy, but this has really inspired me to get to it! Thanks!

Hi Everyone, thank you for your comments! I love receiving and reading every single one of them.

alissa nicolau: please email me at sharilyn at lovelydesign . com with your info!

Anonymous: I actually found my thread spool rack at walmart of all places, but I have seen them all over online as well.

em + anonymous: to be honest i know very little about sewing and sewing machines. I picked up a basic one at sears, because I had giftcards from when i had my daughter (I actually went into labour while picking it out at sears!) All I really wanted it to do was sew straight ahead and straight back, so i just picked up a very basic model... I liked it because it had a cover with it!!! BUT please read here for advise: http://www.purlbee.com/the-purl-bee/category/sewing-machines

I adore your closet! My sewing machine is on a desk in the closet of my studio right now - the studio and the closet are due for an over-haul and your photos are fabulous inspiration for me to change things up.
Thanks so much!

My first studio was in a tiny room and I used the closet like that too! I did not have amazing wallpaper like that though. Fabulous!

Love your idea of a sewing nook in the closet. I wanted to try that with our large closet, but was worried about lighting. Your space came together beautifully, and I might just give it a shot, too.

Your space is beautiful and a great idea for the creatively inclined living in small spaces. I am thinking about transforming a closet of mine and am wondering how you manage the cords from your lamp and sewing machine and whatever other electrical devices. Also, do you feel like you have enough room to spread out when working on a sewing project? That's what I'm afraid of.

sharilyn said...

thanks everyone!

Lori: i dont have any trouble with cords at all. There is enough of a small gap (about 1/4") between the wall and the desk for the cords to hang in behind everything. There is an outlet beside the closet on the wall to the left, and i just ran one power bar into the bottom of the closet, it sits nicely between the desk legs and the wall. I also have 2 large work tables in the room that I use for other projects including sewing too... the closet is simple for stiching and maybe some seamripping : )

this looks fab. i craft in my room as well, and we've talked about moving my STUFF into the closet - but i'm worried about lighting - has it been a problem for you?

I saw your sewing space on Craft:, and just had to see more. So beautiful and so organized... I love it!

Gorgeous space!!

sharilyn said...

Hi Kirsten: no, actually lighting hasn't been a problem at all. There is a large window directly to the left of the closet so that helps, and also the little desk lamp I have reflects light all through the small space of the closet making it nice and bright for working.

Happy zombie: what is Craft??? please share, i'd love to see!

Regina: thanks!!!

i LOVE this closet. I'm thinking this may be the solution to my craft-space problem... that is, if we can find a place for all the things that are now occupying the closet space! oh for an apartment with more room :) i put this on my "wednesday wish list" post -- hope that's ok!

p.s. found you through craftzine as well -- craftzine.com/blog -- here's your feature: http://blog.craftzine.com/archive/2008/10/lovely_designs_closet_craft_ro.html?CMP=OTC-5JF307375954 enjoy! :)

Love your lovely closet space! I'm currently converting my closet space, I think I like your shelves better than the ones I bought. Looks like a trip to Ikea is in store. Thank you for sharing.

Wow! What an inspiring space. I'm new to sewing and am trying to build up a fabric collection like yours. Do you wash all those fabrics before you organize them?

L O V E L Y D E S I G N said...

Thank-you for visiting me, and for leaving a note as well everyone!

Lori: I managed the cords by leaving enough space between the desktop i had cut and the wall for them to run snugly through, and I ran a electrical bar from the wall socket just at left, along the wall into the bottom side of the closet. You are right - I did find, however, that I needed to spread out while sewing larger things. Most of my sewing projects are small, however, but the odd time that I was working on a large project - like binding Adelaide's quilt - I moved the machine to a larger workspace temporarily.

Danielle - Thankyou! I used to wash my fabrics years ago but now I don't - I just found it so difficult to get them back into lovely, ironed out shape after they were washed and this bugged me too much! Most of the fabric I pick up now is of good quality, and so I haven't had any problems with not pre-washing.
