a word about the address files (+ giveaway!)

I feel just awful about the amount of inquiries I receive from people wishing to order an address file from me, and want to write an appology to everyone who has been waiting patiently for one of them.

For over a year now, since the birth of my daughter, I've been promising more (and I have been able to get a few done) but the fact of the matter is that I have been searching for another woodworker to make the wooden bases for me. I used to pay my father to make them all lovingly from scratch, each one perfect and beautiful, but somewhere around 1,000 he got a little fed up and he now has basically gone on strike and refuses to make any more (much to my dismay!)

So the past many months I have been searching for a woodworker to make my beautiful little files. So far, 2 enthusiastic sources have fallen through, leaving me a little disheartened and frustrated. I really want to find a local small business or craftsman to work with on the files and other prodcuts that I have on hold, but it seems that it just isnt happening. China, maybe? I rather not and it seems a shame, but I just can't seem to find anyone small and local to work with.

My search continues, and I really look forward to the day that I can make more address files again. I love them, I love making them: finding and cutting and punching every card by hand and putting them to together one by one. It's so satisfying to me, to make something that I love and I am proud of, and is just a little functional as well!

In the meantime, I have here an address file that I do not wish to sell, as the wooden base has an extra coat of (water-based) laquer on it. It is an "extra" from when my father and I were testing out the best finish for our black walnut wooden files. I have made it up and will send it to one of my wonderful customers or friends. Please leave a comment here and in a week or so I will somehow pick randomly someone out there to send it to. And once again, appologies for anyone out there who has been waiting ever so patiently...

It looks to me to be something that would only improve with age and a patina. It would be a wonderful record of friendship. We live in transitory cosmopolitan town where lots of people come and go and a few of us put down a root or two and make it home. Most of us arrived with two suitcases so feel like pioneers making our homes, looking for ways to give them character and depth. In the absence of family around us, we count on our friends dearly, a great deal of whom now live elsewhere all around the globe.
