a word about the address files (+ giveaway!)

I feel just awful about the amount of inquiries I receive from people wishing to order an address file from me, and want to write an appology to everyone who has been waiting patiently for one of them.

For over a year now, since the birth of my daughter, I've been promising more (and I have been able to get a few done) but the fact of the matter is that I have been searching for another woodworker to make the wooden bases for me. I used to pay my father to make them all lovingly from scratch, each one perfect and beautiful, but somewhere around 1,000 he got a little fed up and he now has basically gone on strike and refuses to make any more (much to my dismay!)

So the past many months I have been searching for a woodworker to make my beautiful little files. So far, 2 enthusiastic sources have fallen through, leaving me a little disheartened and frustrated. I really want to find a local small business or craftsman to work with on the files and other prodcuts that I have on hold, but it seems that it just isnt happening. China, maybe? I rather not and it seems a shame, but I just can't seem to find anyone small and local to work with.

My search continues, and I really look forward to the day that I can make more address files again. I love them, I love making them: finding and cutting and punching every card by hand and putting them to together one by one. It's so satisfying to me, to make something that I love and I am proud of, and is just a little functional as well!

In the meantime, I have here an address file that I do not wish to sell, as the wooden base has an extra coat of (water-based) laquer on it. It is an "extra" from when my father and I were testing out the best finish for our black walnut wooden files. I have made it up and will send it to one of my wonderful customers or friends. Please leave a comment here and in a week or so I will somehow pick randomly someone out there to send it to. And once again, appologies for anyone out there who has been waiting ever so patiently...

I am moving into a new office on Wednesday and the space has a really awful color scheme. I would love to have one of your files to brighten up my sad little cube. Even if you don't choose me, I'd love to know when they're going to be available to purchase again because I really need one!

I know it can be hard work to find local resources, but I wouldn't give up yet and go to China! There must be someone out there in North America (even if you can't find someone in BC) that can make them for you. I have some friends that recently chose to use China for production of their products, and it just made me so sad. I wish you the best of luck in finding a perfect wood worker!

sharilyn: that's so unfortunate! i love your address files so much and think that everyone in the world should have one! don't give up. i wish i were good enough to cut wood-- hehe, because even i'd offer to do it for you! or i can joseph cornell it, and learn as i go. sometimes mistakes come out pretty. :)

i've been pining for one for the longest time and have been saving a place for it in my new home.

i'll just cross my fingers and hope ...

in the meantime, enjoy being a momma and don't worry about the address files. a resolution will surely come when you least expect it.

miss s, you are really something.

i just wanted to comment to say how special it is to know that your dad helped you in creating around 1000 of these gorgeous address files. it is no wonder that they are a highly sought-after item from lovelydesign, and that they are a favorite for you as well.

incredibly generous of you to offer it up as a special gift.

i think you should really put the search out there in the blogging/crafting community, i'm sure you would have some luck in finding that right person to help you make these boxes again!!!

sending you the best,

ps, i can't believe little addie is already a year old!!!!!

Please consider me in the running!

Wow, I've wanted one of these since forever...

A few ideas in Vancouver
- maybe someone at Emily Carr knows someone? Maybe someone in the woodworking studio there knows a local business or craftsman looking for jobs like this.
- maybe another woodworking store on Granville Island would be able to point you somewhere - maybe if you went down there with Addie you'd get some additional points from them :-))
- someone on Bowen? There are lots of crafty and woodworkers over there.
- have you tried posting on Craigslist? Seems like you might be able to get some leads there?

If I think of any other ideas I'll send them your way. I'd LOVE for these to be back in the world again soon! xo f

Although I am not local by any means, I live in Rochester, New York and am married to a wonderful man who is an excellent woodworker. He has such a passion for the small details and for fine woodworking projects, I wonder if there would be a way to establish some working process across the country where he could make your wooden bases. It might be more work than you had anticipated or hoped for, but it would certainly be better than sending your beautiful pieces off to China! If you are interested, take a peak at some of this latest projects: http://flickr.com/photos/aaronmoore

I just think your work is so wonderful and I am such a big fan of the love and care that you put into each piece. I wanted to at least offer up a possible option so that you can continue on with your creating.

Best of luck!

[For proof see my handmade cards - www.stephaniestatham.com ]Anyway, this address holder is beautiful and I couldn't help but throw my name in at a chance to be enough lucky to have one. It will be a delight to whoever takes it home. How nice of you to opt to make someones day over selling it! Good JOB : )

Hi there! Like many it seems, I've been peeking at your site every few months to see if any more address files would pop up. Here's hoping!

I'm confident you can find someone here in Vancouver. Have you considered posting an ad down at the wood co-op down on Granville Island, or at "The Joint" by the Cambie Bridge? I'm sure you'd find lots of willing wood-workers there willing to team up.

BTW, how do you get the tabs to be rounded just so at the corner?

Love your work... It's awesome that you collaborated with your father to put together the address files! I was thinking of using one as a guestbook for our entryway if I win the giveaway or when you have them in production again.

I am sorry to hear about your production problems! Have you tried alterantive solutions like: A jail with a production workshop? Or an organisation with former handcrafts people, now on pension? I hope you find a solution!

I've only come across your blog and shop tonight. I think I'm going to start looking at paper in a whole new way tomorrow.
I hope you find a new woodworker and I hope they put the same care in as your dad obviously did.

I have fallen in love with this since you first made one, but it was always sold out -- I guess my fingers weren't quick enough. Now, I'm just crossing them and hoping for the best! :)

I love that your father made the bases for you for so long! That's such a great story. I think this would be such a cute idea for the seating cards for my wedding! I was getting ready to order the index cards when I realized the base wasn't available and am bummed. Good luck finding someone to make them. (Have you tried the Alchemy feature on Etsy?) I hope you pick me!!

A giveaway! That is sooo nice of you ! I have been interested in your address file for ages and I can't wait for the day to finally have one sitting on my desk - right next to my dearly loved Journey book. I don't mind the wait as long as I know that there will be more in the future. and actually... my father has a home woodshop and so I'll see if he is interested in making some for you. no promises though. enjoy your babytime but keep us fans in your heart for when you have time to create again in the future! Love your work...

Hey!! I've been waiting to buy both the conifers and leaves posters and am so happy to have been able to place my order. I filled my pinecone book with awesome stuff and it lives on my coffee table.

Too, I've been waiting to use my journey book for the first big trip my husband and i take in our young marriage and that will be this summer. We're journeying to Croatia and Turkey and I'm so excited to fill my book with wonderful things.

And glad to know why every time I see if the address files are available they're shown as SOLD OUT! I thought I was just too slow to get to the website...it's super nice of you to offer one as a giveaway! And thanks for making such beautiful stuff that people really love.

I was thinking that this would be the perfect touch to organize wedding guest replies/seating arrangements/etc. with. Being a librarian, I also find it witty and irresistible. Oh happy day, let it be me! And if not tell me when more are to come pretty please!

Hi - A fellow tree-loving friend told me about your site... great work, and beautifully simple.

Please include me in your random give-away, and I am curious if your conifer book is still available.

Hi! I´m already the proud owner of one of your lovely address files, so i´m not entering the giveaway. I just hope you can find someone who can manufacture them, since they are an extraordinary design and you should keep on producing them.
BTW, if you haven´t already, you should register your design, because i´ve seen some copycats lately!
Your address file is one of my most treasured items, it´s really special!

I have been drooling over these for awhile! I would love this one.

BTW, my mother works with a woodworking shop who might be able to make these for you. They are in Los Angeles.

anyway you can make just the innards? I would be willing to try my own hand at woodworking just to get one of these! Maybe you can publish the specs and we can all try our own handiwork but you can sell us the cards!

I have yet to find an address file as beautiful as yours. Whoever you give it to I'm sure that they will cherish it forever.

I've been wanting one of your fantastic address files (there's something so unique and satisfying about keeping all that information stored on paper as opposed to a file somewhere on my computer) My fingers are crossed! :)

i can certainly understand the frustrations of sourcing. it is a really difficult thing to find at a reasonable price and while supporting workmanship you believe in. i hope it all works out for you..in the meantime,i will stay patiently on your waiting list! ;)

Still looking for a woodworker...my dad lives on Vancouver Island and may just be the ticket for you. He does woodwork and carvings as a hobby/craft in his retirement. I would be happy to put you in touch.
